Stockholm Archipelago Trail
– Overview and Stages

20 islands have been selected for the Stockholm Archipelago Trail each with their own story to tell. Below we give a brief overview of each of the hikes included in our trails:

Ålö

A truly wild experience with breathtaking views, enchanting forests, sandy beaches and cliffs. Not to mention the idyllic fish restaurant where you can stop to enjoy fresh seafood (smoked in their own smokery) with great views of the open sea.

Utö

Utö has it all; a bustling village, rocky outcrops, wetlands, gravel roads, technical trails, the sea and breathtaking views. The trail feels a million miles away from the busy harbour.

Ornö

Genuine archipelago life and a viewpoint not to be missed from the southern archipelago's highest point, Telegrafberget view tower.

Fjärdlång

Enjoy the remoteness and tranquility of Fjärdlång's varied trails and coastal views.

Grinda

A popular island for day-trippers with many a secret hideaway waiting to be discovered. Challenging at times but always rewarding.

Svartsö

Gravel roads through pastoral landscapes passing inviting lakes. A farming community, country store, café, boathouses and a charming school are all waiting to be discovered. Svartsö marks the start of the island-hoping hike.

Brottö

This short hike doesn't lack charm thanks to its unique cultural landscape and is the second hop on your island-hopping adventure.

Ingmarsö

The third step of your island-hopping adventure takes you through winding paths along undulating terrain and beautiful forests. End your hike with an island hop over the channel by rowboat.

Finnhamn

The final step of your island-hopping adventure takes you past forests, rocky outcrops, sheltered coves, meadows, grazing animals, a working farm and positive energy all round!

Sandhamn

There's so much more to Sandhamn than its bustling village and fancy villas. Few explore its exquisite pine forests and sandy beaches, dotted around the island. The Stockholm Archipelago Trail ensures that you don't miss anything!

What to pack for your hike along the Stockholm Archipelago trail

One of the charms of hiking the Stockholm Archipelago Trail is that more than often you have the trail to yourself as you leave busy village life far behind. Therefore, don't count on refreshments along the way, and always leave with a day's supply of water and sandwiches in your rucksack.

We recommend that you have the following with you when setting out:

  • Water bottle(s) (filled)
  • Picnic lunch (sandwiches & snacks/nuts)
  • Outdoor sit-map
  • Extra socks
  • Fleece (always cooler in the shade)
  • Sunhat/cap
  • Thin gloves (depending on the season)
  • Rain gear
  • Insect repellent
  • Sunscreen
  • Sunglasses
  • Toilet paper/tissues
  • Binoculars
  • First-Aidkit
  • Mobile (camera & GPX tracks)
  • Route notes & maps

Trekking (Nordic) poles can also be useful as parts of the Stockholm Archipelago Trail may well include some clambering and uneven terrain.

We recommend good quality hiking boots although you will manage with walking shoes but will lose the ankle support and stability of hiking boots often appreciated on uneven, rocky trails.

Where to stay along the trail

There's such a variety of accommodation along the Stockholm Archipelago Trail from basic cabins and hostels to smart hotels.

After a day out on the trails, we understand the pleasure of returning to a cosy, comfortable room with modern facilities and choice of local cuisine from respected restaurants. All our archipelago tours offer clean, comfortable and charming accommodation with private bathrooms where you can relax after a day exploring in the fresh air.

Examples of accommodation used are Utö Värdshus, Grinda Värdshus and Svartsö Skärgårdshotell, all of which offer a typical archipelago atmosphere.

Why choose a self-guided tour?

We believe that there is more fun to be had from taking part on your own self-guided trip than joining a pre-planned tour group where flexibility is hard come by.

Nordic Trails provide the information, and then you are on your own to experience the adventure for yourself. Self-guided gives you the opportunity to go at your own pace, neither waiting for others nor desperately trying to keep up with the front runners.

It is your holiday after all.
